Learning to manage your long-term health condition
On Wednesday the 6th October, the Expert Patients Programme will holding a course in the YMCA in Gilfach, from 1:30pm - 4:00pm.
What is the Expert Patients Programme?
The Expert Patients Programme (EPP) is an NHS based self-management course for people living with any long-term health condition. It helps people improve their quality of life by learning different skills to better manage their condition on a daily basis.
Who is the course for?
Anyone over the age of 18 living with any long-term health condition/s. People with conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, depression and asthma have all benefited.
A condition is considered long-term if the person has had it for 12 months or more.
What does the course offer?
The course is about learning skills to:
- Manage your symptoms
- Deal with stress, depression and low self-image
- Manage pain
- Relax
- Eat healthily
- Work more closely with those caring for you
- Plan for the future
What does the course involve?
Groups of 8-16 participants meet over six weekly sessions of 2½ hours per week. Each session looks at ways to help manage the effects of their long-term condition.
EPP course are free of charge and are run in local communities.
What if my worries are different to other people?
Whatever your condition, the things you have to deal with are similar; tiredness and pain, for example. The course works very well for people with any physical or mental health condition.
There are many advantages to running courses for people with a mix of different conditions. The course gives you the opportunity to put into practice the skills you learn with the support of others who are facing similar challenges.
