Bargoed Rugby Club have concluded a hugely successful and entertaining season.
The first fifteen finished a very creditable 4th in a highly competitive 1st Division East league, and were knocked out of the National Cup in the quarter finals by a very strong Llanelli side at Parc y Scarlets.
In mid April Bargoed were in with a very good chance of finishing as title holders but were forced by the Welsh Rugby Union to play four very hard competitive games inside two weeks. This took its toll on players as injuries and fatigue finally got the better of a very brave squad. However bad the winter and however many fixtures are postponed because of weather conditions the Welsh Rugby Union has a duty of care to its players and forcing clubs to play matches fielding players not fully recovered from injury cannot be a wise move. Sadly for Bargoed's rivals were allowed rest between games and the last two games saw heavy defeats in a much-depleted Bargoed team. It was a season of almost, but a side that can beat the top three in the league and also lose to the bottom three, needs to look closely at winning attitudes when facing what appears to be easy fixtures. There was a bright side to the end of the season however in that several youth players were blooded in the last two games and that experience will see them and the senior squad strengthened for next year.
The second fifteen had a great season and won for the second successive year the Ivor Williams Cup. It was a fitting reward for club stalwarts and the promising young players who are being groomed for first team football.
The youth team although young continue to play a highly entertaining brand of rugby, and enjoy themselves on and off the field. They enjoyed themselves on the end of season tour to Amsterdam, and I am told that they all came back a little older, a little wiser and much poorer.
Thanks must go to the club coaches Steve Barber and David Lynch for the hard work that they have put in with Bargoed over several seasons. Bargoed were languishing way down the leagues, and under their leadership were promoted in five consecutive seasons. They have a record that will probably never be broken going fifty consecutive league games undefeated. They promote a brand of fast open rugby that can be enjoyed by players and spectators alike. They will be joined on the coaching team next year by Jeremy Rogers who has come through the ranks from Youth through Seniors gaining his coaching tickets, and has been successful with the youth team over the last few seasons. Jeremy is a great clubman and has been associated with the club since the late seventies.
A warm welcome awaits anyone at Bargoed Park who would like to play or watch an entertaining brand of rugby and also at the club house after the games.
