Have you got old IT equipment you need to dispose of?
Caerphilly residents urged to donate old computers and mobile phones for ‘IT Amnesty’!
A two week campaign is about to get underway in Caerphilly Borough for people to put their old computers and mobile phones to good use. The ‘IT Amnesty’ will be held at eight collection points in the area, on specific days, from 13th-27th January. Local residents will be able to donate any unwanted IT equipment at the collection points, to be recycled for use in the community.
The campaign is being run by the local Come Surf With Me project, with support from Caerphilly County Borough Council, Partners IT, Communities 2.0 and the Get IT Together project.
Matthew Lloyd is the Communities 2.0 Regional Community Broker for Caerphilly: “Many of us will have some old equipment such as a laptop, games console or computer that is gathering dust in the house, just waiting to be taken to the tip. This IT Amnesty aims to collect up any unwanted equipment, which is preferably still in working order, and recycle it back into communities around Caerphilly. Many local residents are still not online and don’t have access to the very equipment we hope to collect. Anything that we do collect will be donated to people who don’t currently have the means to make the most of our digital world.”
The Get IT Together project is offering a £5 Amazon voucher for each person making a donation to the IT Amnesty.
Details for the public collection points are as follows:
Friday 13th - Van Community Centre 10am till 12 lunch time
Tuesday 17th - Trecenydd Community Centre 10am till 4pm
Friday 20th – Bargoed Library 10am till 4pm

Anyone donating equipment will need to remove any personal data, they need from the equipment, prior to it being handed in. Any data on the donated equipment will be erased using Blancco certified data erasure software; Caerphilly County Borough Council or Partners IT will not be held responsible for any loss or damages caused for anyone not copying or removing data from their equipment prior to donating it.
The collection points will not be able to take televisions or broken ‘CRT’ computer monitors (old, bulky type of monitor).
Businesses can also get involved in the Caerphilly IT Amnesty, but will need to contact Partners IT on 08456 446644 to arrange collection.
